1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Because," said the old man, "the natural repugnance to thecommission of such a crime prevented you from thinking ofit; and so it ever is because in simple and allowable thingsour natural instincts keep us from deviating from the strictline of duty. The tiger, whose nature teaches him to delightin shedding blood, needs but the sense of smell to show himwhen his prey is within his reach, and by following thisinstinct he is enabled to measure the leap necessary topermit him to spring on his victim; but man, on thecontrary, loathes the idea of blood -- it is not alone thatthe laws of social life inspire him with a shrinking dreadof taking life; his natural construction and physiologicalformation" --
2. "What has become of him? Why, he left Marseilles, and wastaken, on the recommendation of M. Morrel, who did not knowhis crime, as cashier into a Spanish bank. During the warwith Spain he was employed in the commissariat of the Frencharmy, and made a fortune; then with that money he speculatedin the funds, and trebled or quadrupled his capital; and, having first married his banker's daughter, who left him awidower, he has married a second time, a widow, a Madame deNargonne, daughter of M. de Servieux, the king'schamberlain, who is in high favor at court. He is amillionaire, and they have made him a baron, and now he isthe Baron Danglars, with a fine residence in the Rue deMont-Blanc, with ten horses in his stables, six footmen inhis ante-chamber, and I know not how many millions in hisstrongbox."
3. "What is the matter?" asked M. d'Avrigny, at the foot of thestairs, it being the hour he usually visited her.
4. "Now, sir," said Monte Cristo, addressing Andrea, "make yourconfession."
5. "What is it?"
6. "You see, I destroy it?"

1. "`"General," said the chief of the assembly, "one man mayinsult fifty -- it is the privilege of weakness. But he doeswrong to use his privilege. Follow my advice, swear, and donot insult." The general, again daunted by the superiorityof the chief, hesitated a moment; then advancing to thepresident's desk, -- "What is the form, said he.
2. "What has just happened."
3. "You are right, your excellency," he said; "this must be oneof your friends." Then going to Albert, he touched him onthe shoulder, saying, "Will your excellency please toawaken?" Albert stretched out his arms, rubbed his eyelids, and opened his eyes. "Oh," said he, "is it you, captain? Youshould have allowed me to sleep. I had such a delightfuldream. I was dancing the galop at Torlonia's with theCountess G---- ." Then he drew his watch from his pocket, that he might see how time sped.
4. "If I have been your friend, Morcerf, your present manner ofspeaking would almost lead me to forget that I ever borethat title. But wait a moment, do not let us get angry, orat least not yet. You are irritated and vexed -- tell me howthis Fernand is related to you?"
5. "All the formalities have been gone through; the inquiry isalready made."
6. "Of hunger, sir, of hunger," said Caderousse. "I am ascertain of it as that we two are Christians."

1. "The other night she left."
2. But three weeks had already passed, and the most diligentsearch had been unsuccessful; the attempted robbery and themurder of the robber by his comrade were almost forgotten inanticipation of the approaching marriage of MademoiselleDanglars to the Count Andrea Cavalcanti. It was expectedthat this wedding would shortly take place, as the young manwas received at the banker's as the betrothed. Letters hadbeen despatched to M. Cavalcanti, as the count's father, whohighly approved of the union, regretted his inability toleave Parma at that time, and promised a wedding gift of ahundred and fifty thousand livres. It was agreed that thethree millions should be intrusted to Danglars to invest;some persons had warned the young man of the circumstancesof his future father-in-law, who had of late sustainedrepeated losses; but with sublime disinterestedness andconfidence the young man refused to listen, or to express asingle doubt to the baron. The baron adored Count AndreaCavalcanti: not so Mademoiselle Eugenie Danglars. With aninstinctive hatred of matrimony, she suffered Andrea'sattentions in order to get rid of Morcerf; but when Andreaurged his suit, she betrayed an entire dislike to him. Thebaron might possibly have perceived it, but, attributing itto a caprice, feigned ignorance.
3. "What is that?" said the Englishman. "What is the meaning ofthat noise?"
4. "I agree with you entirely, sir; but all that even you knowwith respect to the French code, I know, not only inreference to that code, but as regards the codes of allnations. The English, Turkish, Japanese, Hindu laws, are asfamiliar to me as the French laws, and thus I was right, when I said to you, that relatively (you know thateverything is relative, sir) -- that relatively to what Ihave done, you have very little to do; but that relativelyto all I have learned, you have yet a great deal to learn."
5. "Of the `Arabian Nights'?"
6. The Count of Monte Cristo bowed to the five young men with amelancholy and dignified smile, and got into his carriagewith Maximilian and Emmanuel. Albert, Beauchamp, andChateau-Renaud remained alone. Albert looked at his twofriends, not timidly, but in a way that appeared to asktheir opinion of what he had just done.

1. "With you, sir," replied the baroness, "one can wish fornothing, one is so sure to obtain it. If it were so with M.Morrel" --
2. "Oh, how I should like to see these products of yourindustry and patience."
3. "Such are my reasons for not liking to marry MademoiselleDanglars. Have you ever noticed how much a thing isheightened in value when we obtain possession of it? Thediamond which glittered in the window at Marle's or Fossin'sshines with more splendor when it is our own; but if we arecompelled to acknowledge the superiority of another, andstill must retain the one that is inferior, do you not knowwhat we have to endure?"
4、 "And you will find traces of poison?"
5、 The baroness took advantage of her husband's absence to pushopen the door of her daughter's study, and M. Andrea, whowas sitting before the piano with Mademoiselle Eugenie, started up like a jack-in-the-box. Albert bowed with a smileto Mademoiselle Danglars, who did not appear in the leastdisturbed, and returned his bow with her usual coolness.Cavalcanti was evidently embarrassed; he bowed to Morcerf, who replied with the most impertinent look possible. ThenAlbert launched out in praise of Mademoiselle Danglars'voice, and on his regret, after what he had just heard, thathe had been unable to be present the previous evening.Cavalcanti, being left alone, turned to Monte Cristo.

"There," said Monte Cristo placing his arms around thecount, and leaning with him over the front of the box, justas Haidee, whose eyes were occupied in examining the theatrein search of her guardian, perceived his pale features closeto Morcerf's face. It was as if the young girl beheld thehead of Medusa. She bent forwards as though to assureherself of the reality of what she saw, then, uttering afaint cry, threw herself back in her seat. The sound washeard by the people about Ali, who instantly opened thebox-door. "Why, count," exclaimed Eugenie, "what hashappened to your ward? she seems to have been taken suddenlyill."
