1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 She suited action to word, fastened the piece of leather, whichwas eventually to form the right half of the upper of a man'sshoe, by little adjustable clamps, and pushed a small steel rodat the side of the machine. The latter jumped to the task ofpunching, with sharp, snapping clicks, cutting circular bits ofleather out of the side of the upper, leaving the holes whichwere to hold the laces. After observing a few times, the girllet her work at it alone. Seeing that it was fairly well done, she went away.
2. "It's too bad you couldn't have been there, really. I was sorryto hear you weren't feeling well."
3. Chapter XVIII
4. So this was the game, was it? Shut him out and make him pay.Well, by the Lord, that did beat all!
5. He had fixed upon that region as an objective point.
6. "Oh, very," answered Carrie.

1. "You want to pay me to-day," she said one Tuesday, about thistime.
2. It was in this mood that he would occasionally dress up, go for ashave, and, putting on his gloves, sally forth quite actively. Not with any definite aim. It was more a barometric condition. He felt just right for being outside and doing something.
3. "What sort of work do you want to do?"
4. "Is she?" said Mrs. Hurstwood.
5. He was thinking of a full career of vanity and wastefulness whicha young girl might indulge in, and wondering how Carrie couldcontemplate such a course when she had so little, as yet, withwhich to do.
6. He scratched his head and prepared to go down town. He was stillfrowning. As he came into the hall he encountered the girl, whowas now looking after another chamber. She had on a whitedusting cap, beneath which her chubby face shone good-naturedly.Drouet almost forgot his worry in the fact that she was smilingon him. He put his hand familiarly on her shoulder, as if onlyto greet her in passing.

1. For the most part he lounged about, dressed in excellent tailoredsuits of imported goods, a solitaire ring, a fine blue diamond inhis tie, a striking vest of some new pattern, and a watch-chainof solid gold, which held a charm of rich design, and a watch ofthe latest make and engraving. He knew by name, and could greetpersonally with a "Well, old fellow," hundreds of actors, merchants, politicians, and the general run of successfulcharacters about town, and it was part of his success to do so.He had a finely graduated scale of informality and friendship, which improved from the "How do you do?" addressed to thefifteen-dollar-a-week clerks and office attaches, who, by longfrequenting of the place, became aware of his position, to the"Why, old man, how are you?" which he addressed to those noted orrich individuals who knew him and were inclined to be friendly. There was a class, however, too rich, too famous, or toosuccessful, with whom he could not attempt any familiarity ofaddress, and with these he was professionally tactful, assuming agrave and dignified attitude, paying them the deference whichwould win their good feeling without in the least compromisinghis own bearing and opinions. There were, in the last place, afew good followers, neither rich nor poor, famous, nor yetremarkably successful, with whom he was friendly on the score ofgood-fellowship. These were the kind of men with whom he wouldconverse longest and most seriously. He loved to go out and havea good time once in a while--to go to the races, the theatres, the sporting entertainments at some of the clubs. He kept ahorse and neat trap, had his wife and two children, who were wellestablished in a neat house on the North Side near Lincoln Park, and was altogether a very acceptable individual of our greatAmerican upper class--the first grade below the luxuriously rich.
2. "In twenty minutes," said the man.
3. He moved away, forgetting almost all about it the moment Mr.Quincel had ceased talking. He had not even thought to ask thetime or place.
4. "Half 'll be enough," volunteered Hurstwood.
5. "Here we are then," he went on in the same tone, "wasting ourdays. If you are not happy, do you think I am? I sit and writeto you the biggest part of the time. I'll tell you what,Carrie," he exclaimed, throwing sudden force of expression intohis voice and fixing her with his eyes, "I can't live withoutyou, and that's all there is to it. Now," he concluded, showingthe palm of one of his white hands in a sort of at-an-end,helpless expression, "what shall I do?"
6. "Say, Kitty," called one to a girl who was doing a waltz step ina few feet of space near one of the windows, "are you going tothe ball with me?"

1. "You're ready, are you?" he said kindly.
2. "How much?" asked Hurstwood.
3. "Well, I did," he said, angered almost to harsh words. "Youneedn't throw up your success to me. All I asked was a littlehelp until I could get something. I'm not down yet. I'll comeup all right."
4、 Hurstwood went down and out. He walked straight away in thedirection indicated, while the policemen looked after.
5、 She forgot her youth and her beauty. The handicap of age she didnot, in her enthusiasm, perceive.

"Whew!" he said, drawing in his breath.

Hurstwood, warmed and excited, gazed steadily ahead. It was anastonishing experience for him. He had read of these things, butthe reality seemed something altogether new. He was no coward inspirit. The fact that he had suffered this much now ratheroperated to arouse a stolid determination to stick it out. Hedid not recur in thought to New York or the flat. This one tripseemed a consuming thing.

      He thought of the hotels, but instantly he remembered that he hadhad no experience as a clerk, and, what was more important, noacquaintances or friends in that line to whom he could go. Hedid know some hotel owners in several cities, including New York,but they knew of his dealings with Fitzgerald and Moy. He couldnot apply to them. He thought of other lines suggested by largebuildings or businesses which he knew of--wholesale groceries,hardware, insurance concerns, and the like--but he had had noexperience.}

{ "There's lots of them on this line," said the officer on theright.Around the corner a more populated way appeared. One or twopedestrians were in view ahead. A boy coming out of a gate witha tin milk bucket gave Hurstwood his first objectionablegreeting.

The end came with a real mob, which met the car on its returntrip a mile or two from the barns. It was an exceedingly poor-looking neighbourhood. He wanted to run fast through it, butagain the track was blocked. He saw men carrying something outto it when he was yet a half-dozen blocks away.
