He paused a few moments, as if in thought, and then said:

They had come out of the lobby and made their way through theshowy crush about the entrance way.

The rehearsal ended for one day, and Carrie went home feelingthat she had acquitted herself satisfactorily. The words of thedirector were ringing in her ears, and she longed for anopportunity to tell Hurstwood. She wanted him to know just howwell she was doing. Drouet, too, was an object for herconfidences. She could hardly wait until he should ask her, andyet she did not have the vanity to bring it up. The drummer, however, had another line of thought to-night, and her littleexperience did not appeal to him as important. He let theconversation drop, save for what she chose to recite withoutsolicitation, and Carrie was not good at that. He took it forgranted that she was doing very well and he was relieved offurther worry. Consequently he threw Carrie into repression, which was irritating. She felt his indifference keenly andlonged to see Hurstwood. It was as if he were now the onlyfriend she had on earth. The next morning Drouet was interestedagain, but the damage had been done.

Now he looked up in her face, for she was standing a moment, while he sat.

Carrie saw a light.< While the appearance of the shop and the announcement of theprice paid per week operated very much as a blow to Carrie'sfancy, the fact that work of any kind was offered after so rude around of experience was gratifying. She could not begin tobelieve that she would take the place, modest as her aspirationswere. She had been used to better than that. Her mere experienceand the free out-of-door life of the country caused her nature torevolt at such confinement. Dirt had never been her share. Hersister's flat was clean. This place was grimy and low, the girlswere careless and hardened. They must be bad-minded and hearted, she imagined. Still, a place had been offered her. SurelyChicago was not so bad if she could find one place in one day.She might find another and better later.

"Me and Hurstwood--what do you mean?"

It was an important thing to her to hear one so well-positionedand powerful speaking in this manner. She could not help feelingthe strangeness of her situation. How was it that, in so littlea while, the narrow life of the country had fallen from her as agarment, and the city, with all its mystery, taken its place? Here was this greatest mystery, the man of money and affairssitting beside her, appealing to her. Behold, he had ease andcomfort, his strength was great, his position high, his clothingrich, and yet he was appealing to her. She could formulate nothought which would be just and right. She troubled herself nomore upon the matter. She only basked in the warmth of hisfeeling, which was as a grateful blaze to one who is cold.Hurstwood glowed with his own intensity, and the heat of hispassion was already melting the wax of his companion's scruples.

"Look here now, Carrie," he said, "you mustn't act this way. Ididn't mean to hurt your feelings. I don't want to do anythingto make you feel bad."

< "On Wednesday," he replied. It so happened that on the night when Hurstwood, Carrie, andDrouet were in the box at McVickar's, George, Jr., was in thesixth row of the parquet with the daughter of H. B. Carmichael, the third partner of a wholesale dry-goods house of that city.Hurstwood did not see his son, for he sat, as was his wont, asfar back as possible, leaving himself just partially visible, when he bent forward, to those within the first six rows inquestion. It was his wont to sit this way in every theatre--tomake his personality as inconspicuous as possible where it wouldbe no advantage to him to have it otherwise.

"The offices are up those steps," said the bluecoat. His facewas a very neutral thing to contemplate. In his heart of hearts,he sympathised with the strikers and hated this "scab." In hisheart of hearts, also, he felt the dignity and use of the policeforce, which commanded order. Of its true social significance,he never once dreamed. His was not the mind for that. The twofeelings blended in him--neutralised one another and him. Hewould have fought for this man as determinedly as for himself, and yet only so far as commanded. Strip him of his uniform, andhe would have soon picked his side.

< It was not long, however, before the old worry was back forconsideration, and with it what weariness! He thought of themorrow and the suit. He had done nothing, and here was theafternoon slipping away. It was now a quarter of four. At fivethe attorneys would have gone home. He still had the morrowuntil noon. Even as he thought, the last fifteen minutes passedaway and it was five. Then he abandoned the thought of seeingthem any more that day and turned to Carrie. "She doesn't mind," answered Jessica, coolly.

And now the latter announced that they were going away. It wasapproaching spring, and they were going North.
