1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Sure," he returned, pleasantly.
2. At that hour, when Broadway is wont to assume its mostinteresting aspect, a peculiar individual invariably took hisstand at the corner of Twenty-sixth Street and Broadway--a spotwhich is also intersected by Fifth Avenue. This was the hourwhen the theatres were just beginning to receive their patrons.Fire signs announcing the night's amusements blazed on everyhand. Cabs and carriages, their lamps gleaming like yellow eyes, pattered by. Couples and parties of three and four freelymingled in the common crowd, which poured by in a thick stream, laughing and jesting. On Fifth Avenue were loungers--a fewwealthy strollers, a gentleman in evening dress with his lady onhis arm, some club-men passing from one smoking-room to another.Across the way the great hotels showed a hundred gleamingwindows, their cafes and billiard-rooms filled with acomfortable, well-dressed, and pleasure-loving throng. All aboutwas the night, pulsating with the thoughts of pleasure andexhilaration--the curious enthusiasm of a great city bent uponfinding joy in a thousand different ways.
3. "Well, that's as much as to say that I'm a sort of life pill."
4. The rooms were comfortably enough furnished. There was a goodBrussels carpet on the floor, rich in dull red and lemon shades, and representing large jardinieres filled with gorgeous, impossible flowers. There was a large pier-glass mirror betweenthe two windows. A large, soft, green, plush-covered couchoccupied one corner, and several rocking-chairs were set about. Some pictures, several rugs, a few small pieces of bric-a-brac,and the tale of contents is told.
5. At the close of the show it suddenly developed that he was notgoing back with them.
6. Hurstwood's hand dropped.

计划指导

1. "Carrie," she called, "Carrie, come back"; but Carrie was fardown now and the shadow had swallowed her completely.
2. "Yes, the next sleeper back does."
3. One experienced youth volunteered, anyhow.
4. In the third place the individual asked:
5. "I never saw anybody do better than you did then, Cad," he addedruefully, as he leaned an elbow on the table; "I thought you andI were going to get along fine those days."
6. "And whose fault is that?" she said, easily.

1. An inkling of untoward deeds on the part of Hurstwood had come.Doctor Beale, the handsome resident physician of theneighbourhood, met Mrs. Hurstwood at her own doorstep some daysafter Hurstwood and Carrie had taken the drive west on WashingtonBoulevard. Dr. Beale, coming east on the same drive, hadrecognised Hurstwood, but not before he was quite past him. Hewas not so sure of Carrie--did not know whether it wasHurstwood's wife or daughter.
2. THE STRIKE
3. "It Isn't as lively as Chicago," said Hurstwood. "Don't you likeit?"
4. When one of her mind sees many things emphasized and re-emphasized and admired, she gathers the logic of it and appliesaccordingly. Drouet was not shrewd enough to see that this wasnot tactful. He could not see that it would be better to makeher feel that she was competing with herself, not others betterthan herself. He would not have done it with an older, wiserwoman, but in Carrie he saw only the novice. Less clever thanshe, he was naturally unable to comprehend her sensibility. Hewent on educating and wounding her, a thing rather foolish in onewhose admiration for his pupil and victim was apt to grow.
5. Hurstwood went down and out. He walked straight away in thedirection indicated, while the policemen looked after.
6. To add to his misery there was no word from Carrie. He was quitecertain now that she knew he was married and was angered at hisperfidy. His loss seemed all the more bitter now that he neededher most. He thought he would go out and insist on seeing her ifshe did not send him word of some sort soon. He was reallyaffected most miserably of all by this desertion. He had lovedher earnestly enough, but now that the possibility of losing herstared him in the face she seemed much more attractive. Hereally pined for a word, and looked out upon her with his mind'seye in the most wistful manner. He did not propose to lose her, whatever she might think. Come what might, he would adjust thismatter, and soon. He would go to her and tell her all his familycomplications. He would explain to her just where he stood andhow much he needed her. Surely she couldn't go back on him now?It wasn't possible. He would plead until her anger would melt--until she would forgive him.

应用

1. "Yes, you pay the rent," said Carrie. "You talk as if there wasnothing else in the world but a flat to sit around in. Youhaven't done a thing for three months except sit around andinterfere here. I'd like to know what you married me for?"
2. "Yes. You didn't get around."
3. "Very good," interrupted the director, nodding his headsignificantly.
4、 "You keep it," said Hurstwood sadly. "I only want enough to paythe grocer."
5、 "Well, you wait a little while and see," he concluded. "I'llmarry you all right."

There was a door which opened under the steps into the kitchen, protected by an iron grating, intended as a safeguard againstburglars. When he reached this he noticed that it also wasbolted and that the kitchen windows were down. What could itmean? He rang the bell and then waited. Finally, seeing that noone was coming, he turned and went back to his cab.

{ For all this, he still retained the semblance of leadership andcontrol, even though his wife was straining to revolt. Herdisplay of temper and open assertion of opposition were basedupon nothing more than the feeling that she could do it. She hadno special evidence wherewith to justify herself--the knowledgeof something which would give her both authority and excuse. Thelatter was all that was lacking, however, to give a solidfoundation to what, in a way, seemed groundless discontent. Theclear proof of one overt deed was the cold breath needed toconvert the lowering clouds of suspicion into a rain of wrath.

      "No-o," said Mrs. Vance, realising the change of it all. "I'mreally very much in a hurry. I thought I'd just run up and lookin, but I couldn't stay. Just tell your wife she must come andsee me."}

{ The reason for his interest, not to say fascination, was deeperthan mere desire. It was a flowering out of feelings which hadbeen withering in dry and almost barren soil for many years. Itis probable that Carrie represented a better order of woman thanhad ever attracted him before. He had had no love affair sincethat which culminated in his marriage, and since then time andthe world had taught him how raw and erroneous was his originaljudgment. Whenever he thought of it, he told himself that, if hehad it to do over again, he would never marry such a woman. Atthe same time, his experience with women in general had lessenedhis respect for the sex. He maintained a cynical attitude, wellgrounded on numerous experiences. Such women as he had knownwere of nearly one type, selfish, ignorant, flashy. The wives ofhis friends were not inspiring to look upon. His own wife haddeveloped a cold, commonplace nature which to him was anythingbut pleasing. What he knew of that under-world where grovel thebeat-men of society (and he knew a great deal) had hardened hisnature. He looked upon most women with suspicion--a single eyeto the utility of beauty and dress. He followed them with akeen, suggestive glance. At the same time, he was not so dullbut that a good woman commanded his respect. Personally, he didnot attempt to analyse the marvel of a saintly woman. He wouldtake off his hat, and would silence the light-tongued and thevicious in her presence--much as the Irish keeper of a Boweryhall will humble himself before a Sister of Mercy, and pay tollto charity with a willing and reverent hand. But he would notthink much upon the question of why he did so.

He buried himself in his papers and read. Oh, the rest of it--the relief from walking and thinking! What Lethean waters werethese floods of telegraphed intelligence! He forgot his troubles,in part. Here was a young, handsome woman, if you might believethe newspaper drawing, suing a rich, fat, candy-making husband inBrooklyn for divorce. Here was another item detailing thewrecking of a vessel in ice and snow off Prince's Bay on StatenIsland. A long, bright column told of the doings in thetheatrical world--the plays produced, the actors appearing, themanagers making announcements. Fannie Davenport was just openingat the Fifth Avenue. Daly was producing "King Lear." He read ofthe early departure for the season of a party composed of theVanderbilts and their friends for Florida. An interestingshooting affray was on in the mountains of Kentucky. So he read, read, read, rocking in the warm room near the radiator andwaiting for dinner to be served.
