1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Half past seven had sounded. The carriage had been twentyminutes behind the time appointed. D'Artagnan's friendsreminded him that he had a visit to pay, but at the sametime bade him observe that there was yet time to retract. But D'Artagnan was at the same time impetuous and curious. He had made up his mind that he would go to the Palais-Cardinal, and that he would learn what his Eminence had tosay to him. Nothing could turn him from his purpose. They reached the Rue St. Honore, and in the Place du Palais-Cardinal they found the twelve invited Musketeers, walkingabout in expectation of their comrades. There only theyexplained to them the matter in hand.
2. On the bank of the river the executioner approached Milady, and boundher hands and feet.
3. "Why, you killed him! They are the spoils of victory.""I, the heir of an enemy!" said Athos; "for whom, then, doyou take me?"
4. "Fore Gad, these Frenchmen have no consideration!""I had forgotten that England was an island, and that you werethe king of it."
5. "PERHAPS is too much," said D'Artagnan, smiling.
6. All three remounted their horses, and set out at a good pave, while Porthos was promising his adversary to perforate him withall the thrusts known in the fencing schools.

1. "So that this strain of the knee," continued D'Artagnan, "my dearPorthos, keeps you in bed?"
2. "Silence!" said D'Artagnan, pressing her hand still more warmly.A terrible howling interrupted these reflections of D'Artagnanand Mme. Bonacieux. It was her husband, who had discovered thedisappearance of the moneybag, and was crying "Thieves!""Oh, my God!" cried Mme. Bonacieux, "he will rouse the wholequarter."
3. "Still higher."
4.  To see if they be strong;
5. "Do you know me, madame?" said he.
6. "Friend," said Athos, gravely, "remember that it is the deadalone with whom we are not likely to meet again on thisearth. You know something of that, as well as I do, Ithink. Now, if your mistress is not dead, if it is she wehave just seen, you will meet with her again some day orother. And perhaps, my God!" added he, with thatmisanthropic tone which was peculiar to him, "perhaps soonerthan you wish."

1. "It is feared that it may be the smallpox, sir," replied Porthos, desirous of taking his turn in the conversation; "and what isserious is that it will certainly spoil his face.""The smallpox! That's a great story to tell me, Porthos! Sickof the smallpox at his age! No, no; but wounded without doubt, killed, perhaps. Ah, if I knew! S'blood! Messieurs Musketeers,I will not have this haunting of bad places, this quarreling inthe streets, this swordplay at the crossways; and above all, Iwill not have occasion given for the cardinal's Guards, who arebrave, quiet, skillful men who never put themselves in aposition to be arrested, and who, besides, never allow themselvesto be arrested, to laugh at you! I am sure of it--they wouldprefer dying on the spot to being arrested or taking back a step.To save yourselves, to scamper away, to flee--that is good forthe king's Musketeers!"
2. Fortunately, he had no opportunity to give the duke this proof ofhis devotion, and the young woman and the handsome Musketeerentered the Louvre by the wicket of the Echelle without anyinterference.
3. Then he explained to him the cause of his visit, and the service herequired of him. But scarcely had he expressed his request when theunknown, who remained standing before the Musketeer, drew back withsigns of terror, and refused. Then Athos took from his pocket a smallpaper, on which two lines were written, accompanied by a signature anda seal, and presented them to him who had made too prematurely thesesigns of repugnance. The tall man had scarcely read these lines, seenthe signature, and recognized the seal, when he bowed to denote that hehad no longer any objection to make, and that he was ready to obey.Athos required no more. He arose, bowed, went out, returned by the sameway he came, re-entered the hotel, and went to his apartment. At daybreak D'Artagnan entered the chamber, and demanded what was to bedone.
4. "Silence!" said D'Artagnan, taking her hand, which, withoutthinking of it, she abandoned to him.
5. A shudder crept through the body of the cardinal, who did not shudderreadily.
6. "Stop a bit!" said Aramis.

1. "That I can have nothing to say to a man who does not keep hisword."
2. "Yes."
3. "Madame de Lannoy, then, is of opinion that she gave them toBuckingham?"
4、 "How can she be so?"
5、 "Yes, monsieur, we are cousins," said Porthos, without beingdisconcerted, as he had never reckoned upon being receivedenthusiastically by the husband.
