1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Yes, where is this letter?" cried D'Artagnan. "In the firstplace, I warn you that that letter is for Monsieur de Treville, and it must be found, he will not know how to find it."His threat completed the intimidation of the host. After theking and the cardinal, M. de Treville was the man whose name wasperhaps most frequently repeated by the military, and even bycitizens. There was, to be sure, Father Joseph, but his name wasnever pronounced but with a subdued voice, such was the terrorinspired by his Gray Eminence, as the cardinal's familiar wascalled.
2. At that moment he thought of the trees, upon whose leaves thelight still shone; and as one of them drooped over the road, hethought that from its branches he might get a glimpse of theinterior of the pavilion.
3. D'Artagnan thought of the appointment Mme. Bonacieux had madewith him for that very evening; but we are bound to say, to thecredit of our hero, that the bad opinion entertained by M. deTreville of women in general, did not inspire him with the leastsuspicion of his pretty hostess.
4. "Yes, just before you came."
5. "The captain of the cardinal's Guards?"
6. This smile appeared to D'Artagnan to be of bad augury.Only, as our Gascon was not easily intimidated--or rather, thanks to a great pride natural to the men of his country,he did not allow one easily to see what was passing in hismind when that which was passing at all resembled fear--heplaced himself haughtily in front of Messieurs the Guards, and waited with his hand on his hip, in an attitude by nomeans deficient in majesty.

1. "But where are you going to eat my breakfast?" asked thehost.
2. "Thus I have told your Eminence that you had but to question us,and we are ready to reply."
3. The commissary designated by the same gesture Athos andBonacieux, "Let them be guarded more closely than ever.""And yet," said Athos, with his habitual calmness, "if it beMonsieur d'Artagnan who is concerned in this matter, I do notperceive how I can take his place."
4. "That's well! Now let us everyone retire to his own home," saidD'Artagnan, as if he had done nothing but command all his life;"and attention! For from this moment we are at feud with thecardinal."
5. Milady reseated herself, foaming. The officer leaned forward, looked at her in his turn, and appeared surprised to see thatface, just before so beautiful, distorted with passion and almosthideous. The artful creature at once comprehended that she wasinjuring herself by allowing him thus to read her soul; shecollected her features, and in a complaining voice said: "In thename of heaven, sir, tell me if it is to you, if it is to yourgovernment, if it is to an enemy I am to attribute the violencethat is done me?"
6. "And now," said Athos, "while they bring the wine, tell me,D'Artagnan, what has become of the others, come!"D'Artagnan related how he had found Porthos in bed with astrained knee, and Aramis at a table between two theologians. Ashe finished, the host entered with the wine ordered and a hamwhich, fortunately for him, had been left out of the cellar."That's well!" said Athos, filling his glass and that of hisfriend; "here's to Porthos and Aramis! But you, D'Artagnan, whatis the matter with you, and what has happened to you personally? You have a sad air."

1. "From France!" cried Buckingham, forgetting everything in thinking fromwhom that letter came.
2. "My faith," said D'Artagnan, "it appears that I was more drunkthan you, since I remember nothing of the kind."
3. "No, monsieur, be satisfied; nobody saw her," replied D'Artagnan, and he related to M. de Treville how the affair came to pass."Oh, the women, the women!" cried the old soldier. "I know themby their romantic imagination. Everything that savors of mysterycharms them. So you have seen the arm, that was all. You wouldmeet the queen, and she would not know who you are?""No; but thanks to this diamond," replied the young man."Listen," said M. de Treville; "shall I give you counsel, goodcounsel, the counsel of a friend?"
4. "No. It is a gift from my beautiful Englishwoman, or ratherFrenchwoman--for I am convinced she was born in France, though I have not questioned her."
5. "Without waiting for my coming out again?"
6. Buckingham pressed his lips passionately to that beautiful hand, and then rising, said, "Within six months, if I am not dead, Ishall have seen you again, madame--even if I have to overturn theworld." And faithful to the promise he had made, he rushed outof the apartment.

1. "It is only to poets that such things happen," said Athos, gravely.
2. At length, M. de Treville himself returned. The injured man hadrecovered his senses. The surgeon declared that the situation ofthe Musketeer had nothing in it to render his friends uneasy, hisweakness having been purely and simply caused by loss of blood. Then M. de Treville made a sign with his hand, and all retiredexcept D'Artagnan, who did not forget that he had an audience, and with the tenacity of a Gascon remained in his place. When all had gone out and the door was closed, M. de Treville, onturning round, found himself alone with the young man. The eventwhich had occurred had in some degree broken the thread of hisideas. He inquired what was the will of his persevering visitor.D'Artagnan then repeated his name, and in an instant recoveringall his remembrances of the present and the past, M. de Trevillegrasped the situation.
3. "Bah, I have passed perhaps ten times through Chantilly, and outof the ten times I have stopped three or four times at your houseat least. Why I was here only ten or twelve days ago. I wasconducting some friends, Musketeers, one of whom, by the by, hada dispute with a stranger--a man who sought a quarrel with him,for I don't know what."
4、 "We wish to judge you according to your crime," said Athos; "you shallbe free to defend yourself. Justify yourself if you can. M.d'Artagnan, it is for you to accuse her first."
5、 D'Artagnan bowed to Mme. Bonacieux, darting at her the mostloving glance that he could possibly concentrate upon hercharming little person; and while he descended the stairs, heheard the door closed and double-locked. In two bounds he was atthe Louvre; as he entered the wicket of L'Echelle, ten o'clockstruck. All the events we have described had taken place withina half hour.

Terror was so strongly painted on his face, covered with acold sweat, that D'Artagnan took pity on him, and castingupon him a look of contempt, "Stop," said he, "I will showyou the difference between a man of courage and such acoward as you. Stay where you are; I will go myself."And with a light step, an eye on the watch, observing themovements of the enemy and taking advantage of the accidentsof the ground, D'Artagnan succeeded in reaching the secondsoldier.
