1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "In what way?" asked Holmes.
2. "Well, we shall set about explaining it. When once your point ofview is changed, the very thing which was so damning becomes a clue tothe truth. For example, there is this revolver. Miss Dunbardisclaims all knowledge of it. On our new theory she is speaking truthwhen she says so. Therefore, it was placed in her wardrobe. Who placedit there? Someone who wished to incriminate her. Was not that personthe actual criminal? You see how we come at once upon a mostfruitful line of inquiry."
3. Our visitor sniggered, "You do. You are, fortunately, the only manin London who does. Do you know what is the matter with you?""The same," said Holmes.
4. "Mrs. Mason, the nurse, has sworn that she will not leave it nightor day. I can absolutely trust her. I am more uneasy about poor littleJack, for, as I told you in my note, he has twice been assaulted byher."
5. "No, sir. Nothing seemed to have been touched."
6. "Well," said I, as I came hurrying up, "I trust that she is noworse?"

1. "Remarkable, is it not? But consider the facts. Is it acoincidence that it is found at the very point where the train pitchesand sways as it comes round on the points? Is not that the place wherean object upon the roof might be expected to fall off? The pointswould affect no object inside the train. Either the body fell from theroof, or a very curious coincidence has occurred. But now consider thequestion of the blood. Of course, there was no bleeding on the line ifthe body had bled elsewhere. Each fact is suggestive in itself.Together they have a cumulative force."
2. "No, my friend, you might find me a dangerous guest. I have my planslaid, and all will be well. Matters have gone so far now that they canmove without my help as far as the arrest goes, though my presenceis necessary for a conviction. It is obvious, therefore, that I cannotdo better than get away for the few days which remain before thepolice are at liberty to act. It would be a great pleasure to me,therefore, if you could come on to the Continent with me.""The practice is quiet," said I, "and I have an accommodatingneighbour. I should be glad to come."
3. "The first case reported was four days ago," said he. "It was at theshop of Morse Hudson, who has a place for the sale of pictures andstatues in the Kennington Road. The assistant had left the frontshop for an instant, when he heard a crash, and hurrying in he found aplaster bust of Napoleon, which stood with several other works ofart upon the counter, lying shivered into fragments. He rushed outinto the road, but, although several passers-by declared that they hadnoticed a man run out of the shop, he could neither see anyone norcould he find any means of identifying the rascal. It seemed to be oneof those senseless acts of Hooliganism which occur from time totime, and it was reported to the constable on the beat as such. Theplaster cast was not worth more than a few shillings, and the wholeaffair appeared to be too childish for any particular investigation."The second case, however, was more serious, and also more singular. It occurred only last night.
4. At the same moment Holmes stepped out and released the spaniel. Witha joyous cry it dashed forward to the carriage and sprang upon thestep. Then in a moment its eager greeting changed to furious rage, andit snapped at the black skirt above it.
5. "My opinion is in no way altered."
6. "You mean well, Watson," said the sick man with something betweena sob and a groan. "Shall I demonstrate your own ignorance? What doyou know, pray, of Tapanuli fever? What do you know of the blackFormosa corruption?"

1. "No? Now, be reasonable, Count. Consider the situation. You aregoing to be locked up for twenty years. So is Sam Merton. What goodare you going to get out of your diamond? None in the world. But ifyou hand it over- well, I'll compound a felony. We don't want you orSam. We want the stone. Give that up, and so far as I am concerned youcan go free so long as you behave yourself in the future. If youmake another slip- well, it will be the last. But this time mycommission is to get the stone, not you."
2. "It will be verified or disproved at the trial. Meanwhile, come whatmay, Colonel Moran will trouble us no more. The famous air-gun ofVon Herder will embellish the Scotland Yard Museum, and once again Mr.Sherlock Holmes is free to devote his life to examining thoseinteresting little problems which the complex life of London soplentifully presents."
3. "I have to be emphatic, Mr. Holmes, for the time is so limited. Iwould not have him find me here for the world. He is almost due now.But I was so situated that I could not come earlier. His secretary,Mr. Ferguson, only told me this morning of his appointment with you.""And you are his manager?"
4. "What then?"
5. "Excellent. Let me give you a short sketch of what I have done, withsome indication of what we are about to do. Now it must be evidentto you, Watson, that this young man's body was placed on the roof ofthe train. That was clear from the instant that I determined thefact that it was from the roof, and not from a carriage, that he hadfallen."
6. "There is but one thing to do. It must be done at once. Youmust put this piece of paper which you have shown us into thebrass box which you have described. You must also put in a noteto say that all the other papers were burned by your uncle, andthat this is the only one which remains. You must assert that insuch words as will carry conviction with them. Having done this, you must at once put the box out upon the sundial, as directed.Do you understand?"

1. "No, I am not."
2. The Five Orange Pips
3. "Thank you, Miss Turner. You have been of material assistance tome."
4、 "Excellent.
5、 "What should I have done?" I cried, with some heat.

It is of no importance to us, however, since thedecanters were full, and it had therefore not been used.""For all that, its presence has some significance," said Holmes."However, let us hear some more about the objects which do seem to youto bear upon the case."

I should not sit here smokingwith you if I thought that you were a common criminal, you may be sureof that. Be frank with me and we may do some good. Play tricks withme, and I'll crush you."
