1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "The man who owns this ground has sold it."
2. The latter departed, and at one o'clock reappeared, stunninglyarrayed in a dark-blue walking dress, with a nobby hat to match.Carrie had gotten herself up charmingly enough, but this womanpained her by contrast. She seemed to have so many dainty littlethings which Carrie had not. There were trinkets of gold, anelegant green leather purse set with her initials, a fancyhandkerchief, exceedingly rich in design, and the like. Carriefelt that she needed more and better clothes to compare with thiswoman, and that any one looking at the two would pick Mrs. Vancefor her raiment alone. It was a trying, though rather unjustthought, for Carrie had now developed an equally pleasing figure, and had grown in comeliness until she was a thoroughly attractivetype of her colour of beauty. There was some difference in theclothing of the two, both of quality and age, but this differencewas not especially noticeable. It served, however, to augmentCarrie's dissatisfaction with her state.
3. "I need to make a living."
4. He was so excited that he could not stay in the box. He wentinto the lobby, and then into the street, thinking. Drouet didnot return. In a few minutes the last act was over, and he wascrazy to have Carrie alone. He cursed the luck that could keephim smiling, bowing, shamming, when he wanted to tell her that heloved her, when he wanted to whisper to her alone. He groaned ashe saw that his hopes were futile. He must even take her tosupper, shamming. He finally went about and asked how she wasgetting along. The actors were all dressing, talking, hurryingabout. Drouet was palavering himself with the looseness ofexcitement and passion. The manager mastered himself only by agreat effort.
5. Carrie stood looking while the lady retired to her office.
6. "I didn't find out anything to-day," said Carrie, taking off hergloves. "They all want money to get you a place."

1. "Oh, I do want to see Nat Goodwin," said Mrs. Vance. "I do thinkhe is the jolliest actor. The papers say this is such a goodplay."
2. In a day or two he was up again, but rough weather holding, hestayed in. The Italian newsdealer now delivered the morningpapers, and these he read assiduously. A few times after that heventured out, but meeting another of his old-time friends, hebegan to feel uneasy sitting about hotel corridors.
3. He moved nervously about, while Carrie looked at him confusedly.
4. "No."
5. The line was growing rapidly. Already there were fifty or more, and those at the head, by their demeanour, evidentlycongratulated themselves upon not having so long to wait as thoseat the foot. There was much jerking of heads, and looking downthe line.
6. "Well," he said, jokingly, "I'll come and get you one of theseevenings," and then he laughed.

1. "The next train for Montreal leaves when?" he asked.
2. "Oh, thou failure!" said the voice.
3. "I was just telling her," put in Drouet, now delighted with hispossession, "that I thought she did fine."
4. The sum and substance of it was that there was no hope, and theywanted the money with the least trouble possible. Hurstwood readhis doom. He decided to pay ,500 to the agent whom they saidthey would send, keeping ,300 for his own use. He telegraphedhis acquiescence, explained to the representative who called atthe hotel the same day, took a certificate of payment, and toldCarrie to pack her trunk. He was slightly depressed over thisnewest move at the time he began to make it, but eventuallyrestored himself. He feared that even yet he might be seized andtaken back, so he tried to conceal his movements, but it wasscarcely possible. He ordered Carrie's trunk sent to the depot, where he had it sent by express to New York. No one seemed to beobserving him, but he left at night. He was greatly agitatedlest at the first station across the border or at the depot inNew York there should be waiting for him an officer of the law.
5. He took them out and straightened the matter, but now the terrorhad gone. Why be afraid?
6. In this situation her thoughts went out to her sister in VanBuren Street, whom she had not seen since the night of herflight, and to her home at Columbia City, which seemed now a partof something that could not be again. She looked for no refugein that direction. Nothing but sorrow was brought her bythoughts of Hurstwood, which would return. That he could havechosen to dupe her in so ready a manner seemed a cruel thing.

1. "Indeed it was. My wife enjoyed it very much."
2. "Oh, he's a nice man. He's manager of Fitzgerald and Moy's."
3. Carrie thought this over. She had never been on the road.
4、 "I didn't know that," said Carrie.
5、 There was no water on this floor. He put on his shoes in thecold and stood up, shaking himself in his stiffness. His clothesfelt disagreeable, his hair bad.

At last evening came, and with it hunger and a debate withhimself as to how he should spend the night. It was half-pastfive. He must soon eat.
