1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
2. "Well, it must be the creature who lives in the only comfortableroom in the place and has her photograph above his fireplace. Uponmy word, Watson, there is something very attractive about that lividface at the window, and I would not have missed the case for worlds.""You have a theory?"
3. "He is armed and ready. If we shot him we could hardly get away in aplace like this. Besides, it's likely enough that the police knowwhatever evidence he has got. Hallo! What was that?"
4. "You are proud of your brains, Holmes, are you not? Think yourselfsmart, don't you? You came across someone who was smarter this time. Now cast your mind back, Holmes. Can you think of no other way youcould have got this thing?"
5. "Come along!" cried Sherlock Holmes abruptly. "This growsserious," he observed as we drove to Scotland Yard. "These men havegot hold of Melas again. He is a man of no physical courage, as theyare well aware from their experience the other night. This villain wasable to terrorize him the instant that he got into his presence. Nodoubt they want his professional services, but, having used him, they may be inclined to punish him for what they will regard as histreachery."
6. "Quite so. We will come to the bicycle presently. To continue ourreasoning: if these people did not go by the road, they must havetraversed the country to the north of the house or to the south of thehouse. That is certain. Let us weigh the one against the other. On thesouth of the house is, as you perceive, a large district of ambleland, cut up into small fields, with stone walls between them. There, I admit that a bicycle is impossible. We can dismiss theidea. We turn to the country on the north. Here there lies a groveof trees, marked as the 'Ragged Shaw,' and on the farther sidestretches a great rolling moor, Lower Gill Moor, extending for tenmiles and sloping gradually upward. Here, at one side of thiswilderness, is Holdernesse Hall, ten miles by road, but only sixacross the moor. It is a peculiarly desolate plain. A few moor farmershave small holdings, where they rear sheep and cattle. Except these, the plover and the curlew are the only inhabitants until you come tothe Chesterfield high road. There is a church there, you see, a fewcottages, and an inn. Beyond that the hills become precipitous. Surelyit is here to the north that our quest must lie."

1. "'That is very handsome' said I. When should I take over my newduties?'
2. "Lord Robert St. Simon," announced our page-boy, throwing open thedoor. A gentleman entered, with a pleasant, cultured face,high-nosed and pale, with something perhaps of petulance about themouth, and with the steady, well-opened eye of a man whose pleasantlot it had ever been to command and to be obeyed. His manner wasbrisk, and yet his general appearance gave an undue impression of age,for he had a slight forward stoop and a little bend of the knees as hewalked. His hair, too, as he swept off his very curly-brimmed hatwas grizzled round the edges and thin upon the top. As to his dress,it was careful to the verge of foppishness, with high collar, blackfrock-coat, white waistcoat, yellow gloves, patent leather shoes, and light-coloured gaiters. He advanced slowly into the room, turning his head from left to right, and swinging in his right handthe cord which held his golden eyeglasses.
3. "No. They were found floating near the margin by a park-keeper. Theyhave been identified as her clothes, and it seemed to me that if theclothes were there the body would not be far off."
4. "What is Mrs. Mason like?" asked Holmes.
5. "I see--her ladyship's waiting-maid. Well, the temptation ofsudden wealth so easily acquired was too much for you, as it hasbeen for better men before you; but you were not very scrupulousin the means you used. It seems to me, Ryder, that there is themaking of a very pretty villain in you. You knew that this manHorner, the plumber, had been concerned in some such matterbefore, and that suspicion would rest the more readily upon him. What did you do, then? You made some small job in my lady'sroom--you and your confederate Cusack--and you managed that heshould be the man sent for. Then, when he had left, you rifledthe jewel-case, raised the alarm, and had this unfortunate manarrested. You then--"
6. It was a very large and high chamber, with carved oak ceiling, oakenpanelling, and a fine array of deer's heads and ancient weapons aroundthe walls. At the further end from the door was the high French windowof which we had heard. Three smaller windows on the right-hand sidefilled the apartment with cold winter sunshine. On the left was alarge, deep fireplace, with a massive, overhanging oak mantelpiece.Beside the fireplace was a heavy oaken chair with arms and crossbarsat the bottom. In and out through the open woodwork was woven acrimson cord, which was secured at each side to the crosspiecebelow. In releasing the lady, the cord had been slipped off her, butthe knots with which it had been secured still remained. These detailsonly struck our attention afterwards, for our thoughts were entirelyabsorbed by the terrible object which lay upon the tigerskin hearthrugin front of the fire.

1. "'My father made the fellow gardener,' said my companion, 'and then,as that did not satisfy him, he was promoted to be butler. The houseseemed to be at his mercy, and he wandered about and did what he chosein it. The maids complained of his drunken habits and his vilelanguage. The dad raised their wages all round to recompense themfor the annoyance. The fellow would take the boat and my father's bestgun and treat himself to little shooting trips. And all this with sucha sneering, leering, insolent face that I would have knocked himdown twenty times over if he had been a man of my own age. I tell you,Holmes, I have had to keep a tight hold upon myself all this time; andnow I am asking myself whether, if I had let myself go a littlemore, I might not have been a wiser man.
2. "That was in all the dailies. No answer."
3. "By no means."
4. "The fact is that upon his entrance I had instantly recognized theextreme personal danger in which I lay. The only conceivable escapefor him lay in silencing my tongue. In an instant I had slipped therevolver from the drawer into my pocket and was covering him throughthe cloth. At his remark I drew the weapon out and laid it cocked uponthe table. He still smiled and blinked, but there was somethingabout his eyes which made me feel very glad that I had it there."'You evidently don't know me,' said he.
5. "What harm is there in the letters?" he asked.
6. "Is he not afraid of burglars?"

1. "You could not distinguish."
2. Once more, however, my friend was destined to be disappointed. Hecame back at night weary and unsuccessful.
3. Amid the droning of the wind there had come the stamping of ahorse's hoofs, and the long grind of a wheel as it rasped againstthe curb. The cab which I had seen had pulled up at our door."What can he want?" I ejaculated, as a man stepped out of it."Want? He wants us. And we, my poor Watson, want overcoats andcravats and goloshes, and every aid that man ever invented to fightthe weather. Wait a bit, though! There's the cab off again! There'shope yet. He'd have kept it if he had wanted us to come. Run down,my dear fellow, and open the door, for all virtuous folk have beenlong in bed."
4、 "And you did very wisely," said Holmes. "Your case is anexceedingly remarkable one, and I shall be happy to look into it.From what you have told me I think that it is possible that graverissues hang from it than might at first sight appear."
5、 "The Duke, then?"

Holmes had been seated for some hours in silence with his long, thinback curved over a chemical vessel in which he was brewing aparticularly malodorous product. His head was sunk upon his breast, and he looked from my point of view like a strange, lank bird, withdull gray plumage and a black top-knot.

The inspector stared about him in bewilderment. "Oh, come now, Mr.Holmes," said he at last, "I'm sure you don't really mean to-""Tut, man, look at their faces!" cried Holmes curtly.

"Well, there is at least a curious coincidence of dates. Aventilator is made, a cord is hung, and a lady who sleeps in the beddies. Does not that strike you?"

      "One moment, Gregson," said Holmes. "I rather fancy that this ladymay be as anxious to give us information as we can be to get it. Youunderstand, madam, that your husband will be arrested and tried forthe death of the man who lies before us? What you say may be used inevidence. But if you think that he has acted from motives which arenot criminal, and which he would wish to have known, then you cannotserve him better than by telling us the whole story."}

"Yes, gentlemen," said he, "it is the most famous pearl now existingin the world, and it has been my good fortune, by a connected chain ofinductive reasoning, to trace it from the Prince of Colonna'sbedroom at the Dacre Hotel, where it was lost, to the interior ofthis, the last of the six busts of Napoleon which were manufactured byGelder & Co., of Stepney. You will remember, Lestrade, the sensationcaused by the disappearance of this valuable jewel and the vainefforts of the London police to recover it. I was myself consultedupon the case, but I was unable to throw any light upon it.Suspicion fell upon the maid of the Princess, who was an Italian, and it was proved that she had a brother in London, but we failed totrace any connection between them. The maid's name was LucretiaVenucci, and there is no doubt in my mind that this Pietro who wasmurdered two nights ago was the brother. I have been looking up thedates in the old files of the paper, and I find that the disappearanceof pearl was exactly two days before the arrest of Beppo, for somecrime of violence- an event which took place in the factory ofGelder & Co., at the very moment when these busts were being made. Nowyou clearly see the sequence of events, though you see them, ofcourse, in the inverse order to the way in which they presentedthemselves to me. Beppo had the pearl in his possession. He may havestolen it from Pietro, he may have been Pietro's confederate, he mayhave been the go-between of Pietro and his sister. It is of noconsequence to us which is the correct solution.

"Yes, so you would say. But the fact remains that there isn't."He took the corner of the carpet in his hand and, turning it over,he showed that it was indeed as he said.
