1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 As the procureur had told Madame Danglars, Valentine was notyet recovered. Bowed down with fatigue, she was indeedconfined to her bed; and it was in her own room, and fromthe lips of Madame de Villefort, that she heard all thestrange events we have related, -- we mean the flight ofEugenie and the arrest of Andrea Cavalcanti, or ratherBenedetto, together with the accusation of murder pronouncedagainst him. But Valentine was so weak that this recitalscarcely produced the same effect it would have done had shebeen in her usual state of health. Indeed, her brain wasonly the seat of vague ideas, and confused forms, mingledwith strange fancies, alone presented themselves before hereyes.
2. "Do you prefer I should seek M. d'Epinay?"
3. "It was not I who wished to kill the Jew," said Caderousse;"it was La Carconte."
4. "And you leave us," said Julie, "at a moment's warning? youdo not give us a day -- no, not even an hour before yourdeparture?"
5. "Adieu till then." Notwithstanding a slight resistance onthe part of Monte Cristo, whose lips turned pale, but whopreserved his ceremonious smile, Andrea seized the count'shand, pressed it, jumped into his phaeton, and disappeared.
6. "Partly to drown the recollections of the past that hauntedme, partly to supply the wants of the poor widow, I eagerlyreturned to my trade of smuggler, which had become more easysince that relaxation of the laws which always follows arevolution. The southern districts were ill-watched inparticular, in consequence of the disturbances that wereperpetually breaking out in Avignon, Nimes, or Uzes. Weprofited by this respite on the part of the government tomake friends everywhere. Since my brother's assassination inthe streets of Nimes, I had never entered the town; theresult was that the inn-keeper with whom we were connected, seeing that we would no longer come to him, was forced tocome to us, and had established a branch to his inn, on theroad from Bellegarde to Beaucaire, at the sign of the Pontdu Gard. We had thus, at Aigues-Mortes, Martigues, or Bouc,a dozen places where we left our goods, and where, in caseof necessity, we concealed ourselves from the gendarmes andcustom-house officers. Smuggling is a profitable trade, whena certain degree of vigor and intelligence is employed; asfor myself, brought up in the mountains, I had a doublemotive for fearing the gendarmes and custom-house officers,as my appearance before the judges would cause an inquiry, and an inquiry always looks back into the past. And in mypast life they might find something far more grave than theselling of smuggled cigars, or barrels of brandy without apermit. So, preferring death to capture, I accomplished themost astonishing deeds, and which, more than once, showed methat the too great care we take of our bodies is the onlyobstacle to the success of those projects which requirerapid decision, and vigorous and determined execution. Inreality, when you have once devoted your life to yourenterprises, you are no longer the equal of other men, or,rather, other men are no longer your equals, and whosoeverhas taken this resolution, feels his strength and resourcesdoubled."

1. "Ah, baron, baron," said Albert, "you are not listening --what barbarism in a melomaniac like you!"
2. "I know he cannot save my life, but he may strengthen me togive my evidence."
3. "I showed you this morning that I had a heart, did I not, count?" Monte Cristo only answered by extending his hand tothe young man. "Well," continued the latter, "since thatheart is no longer with you in the Bois de Vincennes, it iselsewhere, and I must go and find it."
4. "Well, then, I must be contented to imagine it."
5. "To leave you?"
6. "Good!" said the gendarme, placing his knee on his chest;"believe soft-spoken gentlemen again! Harkye, my friend, Ihave disobeyed my first order, but I will not disobey thesecond; and if you move, I will blow your brains out." Andhe levelled his carbine at Dantes, who felt the muzzleagainst his temple.

1. "Surely so trifling a circumstance cannot deserve a place inyour remembrance. Believe me, madame, I had entirelyforgotten it."
2. "Alicante, if you please; it is my favorite wine."
3. "Because they are looking for her where she is not to befound."
4. "Oh," he exclaimed, running furiously and tearing his hair-- "Oh, who will deliver me from this man? Wretched --wretched that I am!"
5. "Nothing has happened to him, I hope," said the countfrowningly.
6. "Because I sigh when thinking of some one I am leaving?Come, Morrel, it is not like a soldier to be so bad a judgeof courage. Do I regret life? What is it to me, who havepassed twenty years between life and death? Moreover, do notalarm yourself, Morrel; this weakness, if it is such, isbetrayed to you alone. I know the world is a drawing-room,from which we must retire politely and honestly; that is,with a bow, and our debts of honor paid."

1. Villefort retained his place, but his marriage was put offuntil a more favorable opportunity. If the emperor remainedon the throne, Gerard required a different alliance to aidhis career; if Louis XVIII. returned, the influence of M. deSaint-Meran, like his own, could be vastly increased, andthe marriage be still more suitable. The deputy-procureurwas, therefore, the first magistrate of Marseilles, when onemorning his door opened, and M. Morrel was announced.
2. And for the second time Haidee stopped, overcome by suchviolent emotion that the perspiration stood upon her palebrow, and her stifled voice seemed hardly able to findutterance, so parched and dry were her throat and lips.Monte Cristo poured a little iced water into a glass, andpresented it to her, saying with a mildness in which wasalso a shade of command, -- "Courage."
3. "Well, do you comprehend now?" inquired Faria.
4、 "Never mind," replied Villefort; "I say that this marriageshall be consummated."
5、 "Yes," replied the invalid.

"Sir," replied the mayor. "I know very well that during thelast four or five years misfortune has seemed to pursue M.Morrel. He has lost four or five vessels, and suffered bythree or four bankruptcies; but it is not for me, although Iam a creditor myself to the amount of ten thousand francs,to give any information as to the state of his finances. Askof me, as mayor, what is my opinion of M. Morrel, and Ishall say that he is a man honorable to the last degree, andwho has up to this time fulfilled every engagement withscrupulous punctuality. This is all I can say, sir; if youwish to learn more, address yourself to M. de Boville, theinspector of prisons, No. 15, Rue de Nouailles; he has, Ibelieve, two hundred thousand francs in Morrel's hands, andif there be any grounds for apprehension, as this is agreater amount than mine, you will most probably find himbetter informed than myself."
