1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 On the first morning it rained she found that she had noumbrella. Minnie loaned her one of hers, which was worn andfaded. There was the kind of vanity in Carrie that troubled atthis. She went to one of the great department stores and boughtherself one, using a dollar and a quarter of her small store topay for it.
2. He tried to show Carrie that there was no cause for financialalarm, but only congratulation over the chance he would have atthe end of the year by taking her rather more frequently to thetheatre and by providing a liberal table. This was for the timeonly. He was getting in the frame of mind where he wantedprincipally to be alone and to be allowed to think. The diseaseof brooding was beginning to claim him as a victim. Only thenewspapers and his own thoughts were worth while. The delight oflove had again slipped away. It was a case of live, now, makingthe best you can out of a very commonplace station in life.
3. "Very well," said Carrie.
4. "If you don't report more regularly we'll have to cut you off thelist."
5. "I want to get some other things," said Carrie.
6. "I don't know," said Carrie; "I'll go down Monday and see if Ican't get something."

1. "She said she was going down to the foot of the stairs," answeredMinnie. "I guess she just wants to look out a while."
2. "Still," he said, "what could I have done?"
3. To her credit, be it said, she never once counted on Hurstwood. She could only approach that subject with a pang of sorrow andregret. For a truth, she was rather shocked and frightened bythis evidence of human depravity. He would have tricked herwithout turning an eyelash. She would have been led into a newerand worse situation. And yet she could not keep out the picturesof his looks and manners. Only this one deed seemed strange andmiserable. It contrasted sharply with all she felt and knewconcerning the man.
4. "I see," said this individual, who wore sporting clothes of themost attractive pattern, and had a field-glass strung over hisshoulder, "that you did not get over to our little entertainmentlast evening."
5. "By damn, I wish they'd hurry up."
6. Carrie looked out again at the passing crowd.

1. "No, she has gone to the theatre."
2. "Who--who is?" said Carrie, stumbling at the word.
3. "Oh!" he exclaimed, pushing back from the table, as if to saymore, but letting it go at that. Then he picked up his paper.Carrie left her seat, containing herself with difficulty. He sawshe was hurt.
4. Carrie answered, but was looking away. Down the aisle, towardthe gate leading into the waiting-room and the street, stoodDrouet. He was looking back. When he saw that she saw him andwas safe with her sister he turned to go, sending back the shadowof a smile. Only Carrie saw it. She felt something lost to herwhen he moved away. When he disappeared she felt his absencethoroughly. With her sister she was much alone, a lone figure ina tossing, thoughtless sea.
5. At last the curtain was ready to go up. All the details of themake-up had been completed, and the company settled down as theleader of the small, hired orchestra tapped significantly uponhis music rack with his baton and began the soft curtain-raisingstrain. Hurstwood ceased talking, and went with Drouet and hisfriend Sagar Morrison around to the box.
6. The gentleman looked him over and fished for a dime. Nothing butquarters were in his pocket.

1. "Now, I've just enough to get on to the end of the week," sheconfided.
2. "Just before you came back."
3. When Hanson came home at seven o'clock, he was inclined to be alittle crusty--his usual demeanour before supper. This nevershowed so much in anything he said as in a certain solemnity ofcountenance and the silent manner in which he slopped about. Hehad a pair of yellow carpet slippers which he enjoyed wearing, and these he would immediately substitute for his solid pair ofshoes. This, and washing his face with the aid of common washingsoap until it glowed a shiny red, constituted his onlypreparation for his evening meal. He would then get his eveningpaper and read in silence.
4、 "Do. Take him to the kitchen and tell Wilson to give himsomething to eat."
5、 "Do you find these satisfactory?" observed Mr. Withers.

      "I will," said Hurstwood.

  • 刘华清 08-14

Suddenly the air with which she asked attracted his attention.

  • 石磊 08-14

"My, but you're a little beauty," Drouet was wont to exclaim toher.

  • 李龙辉 08-14

      She told him.

{ The whole of this conversation was such a shock that, coming asit did after all the other worry of the past week, it sufficed toinduce a deep gloom and moral revulsion in Hurstwood. What hurthim most was the fact that he was being pursued as a thief. Hebegan to see the nature of that social injustice which sees butone side--often but a single point in a long tragedy. All thenewspapers noted but one thing, his taking the money. How andwherefore were but indifferently dealt with. All thecomplications which led up to it were unknown. He was accusedwithout being understood.

      "That would be good, wouldn't it?" she said, sympathetically.}

Carrie timidly waited, standing. There were chairs, but no onemotioned her to be seated. The individual to whom the managerhad been talking went away quite crestfallen. That luminarygazed earnestly at some papers before him, as if they were of thegreatest concern.

"That puts a burden of duty on you. It so happens that you havethis thing. It is no credit to you--that is, I mean, you mightnot have had it. You paid nothing to get it. But now that youhave it, you must do something with it."

  • 李捷增 08-11

"Indeed it was. My wife enjoyed it very much."

  • 候萝径 08-09

    { "I wouldn't," said Minnie.

"Pretty, too, isn't she?" said Quincel.
