1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 He bowed and backed toward the door.
2. "Come again," said the youth, pushing out a small pile of reds.
3. "George!" exclaimed Drouet, "I forgot that."
4. She sat meditating, merely shaking her head.
5. "What?" inquired Carrie.
6. "Isn't Mr. Drake going to open his hotel?" Carrie asked severaltimes.

1. Hurstwood moved his eyes over the paper slowly, but said nothing.
2. The next evening Carrie was called out, much as if for an error.
3. "Now, come on," he said.
4. "Of course," he answered, "you know I will."
5. Carrie almost trembled for her daring after she had said this. All members of the company had been warned that to interpolatelines or "business" meant a fine or worse. She did not know whatto think.
6. She did not realise what she was doing by allowing these feelingsto possess her. Hurstwood, noticing the kindness, conceivedbetter of her. "Carrie's good-natured, anyhow," he thought.

1. "Did I do so very bad?"
2. Carrie went on, leading much this same life for six monthsthereafter or more. She did not see Ames any more. He calledonce upon the Vances, but she only heard about it through theyoung wife. Then he went West, and there was a gradualsubsidence of whatever personal attraction had existed. Themental effect of the thing had not gone, however, and never wouldentirely. She had an ideal to contrast men by--particularly menclose to her.
3. "You came, dearest," he said eagerly, standing to meet her andtaking her hand.
4. "Not to-night," she said, shaking her head. "We'll have a talksome other time."
5. Hurstwood heard this, dead to the horror of it. He rocked alittle to and fro, and chewed at his finger. It seemed all verynatural in such extreme states. He would do better later on.
6. "Oh, do," said Lola. "We'll have such a good time."

1. "At the Waldorf," she answered, mentioning the fashionablehostelry then but newly erected.
2. "Yes; but I can't get along with my people. They always want meto do what they want. Do you live here?"
3. "Is it?" said Mrs. Hurstwood.
4、 "Won't you come have a drink?"
5、 At home was Hurstwood, daily giving her cause for thought. Heseemed to get nothing to do, and yet he made bold to inquire howshe was getting along. The regularity with which he did thissmacked of some one who was waiting to live upon her labour. Nowthat she had a visible means of support, this irritated her. Heseemed to be depending upon her little twelve dollars.

"He's here in New York, I guess," she said. "I haven't seen himfor some time."

So now, the house, to his mind, had a most pleasing andcomfortable appearance. In the hall he found an evening paper, laid there by the maid and forgotten by Mrs. Hurstwood. In thedining-room the table was clean laid with linen and napery andshiny with glasses and decorated china. Through an open door hesaw into the kitchen, where the fire was crackling in the stoveand the evening meal already well under way. Out in the smallback yard was George, Jr., frolicking with a young dog he hadrecently purchased, and in the parlour Jessica was playing at thepiano, the sounds of a merry waltz filling every nook and cornerof the comfortable home. Every one, like himself, seemed to haveregained his good spirits, to be in sympathy with youth andbeauty, to be inclined to joy and merry-making. He felt as if hecould say a good word all around himself, and took a most genialglance at the spread table and polished sideboard before goingupstairs to read his paper in the comfortable armchair of thesitting-room which looked through the open windows into thestreet. When he entered there, however, he found his wifebrushing her hair and musing to herself the while.
