1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Carrie listened at her window view, more astonished than anythingelse at this sudden rise of passion in the drummer. She couldhardly believe her senses--so good-natured and tractable had heinvariably been. It was not for her to see the wellspring ofhuman passion. A real flame of love is a subtle thing. It burnsas a will-o'-the-wisp, dancing onward to fairylands of delight. It roars as a furnace. Too often jealousy is the quality uponwhich it feeds.
2. "If we could have such a home as that," said Mrs. Hale sadly,"how delightful it would be."
3. "Isn't your name Mason?" asked the manager.
4. There came a day when the first premonitory blast of winter sweptover the city. It scudded the fleecy clouds in the heavens, trailed long, thin streamers of smoke from the tall stacks, andraced about the streets and corners in sharp and sudden puffs.Carrie now felt the problem of winter clothes. What was she todo? She had no winter jacket, no hat, no shoes. It was difficultto speak to Minnie about this, but at last she summoned thecourage.
5. "I don't know what the devil there is to do," he observed.
6. At one o'clock he thought of eating, and went to a restaurant inMadison Square. There he pondered over places which he mightlook up. He was tired. It was blowing up grey again. Acrossthe way, through Madison Square Park, stood the great hotels, looking down upon a busy scene. He decided to go over to thelobby of one and sit a while. It was warm in there and bright. He had seen no one he knew at the Broadway Central. In alllikelihood he would encounter no one here. Finding a seat on oneof the red plush divans close to the great windows which look outon Broadway's busy rout, he sat musing. His state did not seemso bad in here. Sitting still and looking out, he could takesome slight consolation in the few hundred dollars he had in hispurse. He could forget, in a measure, the weariness of thestreet and his tiresome searches. Still, it was only escape froma severe to a less severe state. He was still gloomy anddisheartened. There, minutes seemed to go very slowly. An hourwas a long, long time in passing. It was filled for him withobservations and mental comments concerning the actual guests ofthe hotel, who passed in and out, and those more prosperouspedestrians whose good fortune showed in their clothes andspirits as they passed along Broadway, outside. It was nearlythe first time since he had arrived in the city that his leisureafforded him ample opportunity to contemplate this spectacle. Now, being, perforce, idle himself, he wondered at the activityof others. How gay were the youths he saw, how pretty the women.Such fine clothes they all wore. They were so intent upongetting somewhere. He saw coquettish glances cast by magnificentgirls. Ah, the money it required to train with such--how well heknew! How long it had been since he had had the opportunity to doso!

1. "It doesn't do any harm," said Vance, who was still studying thebill of fare, though he had ordered.
2. "That's it," he said; "that's a fine play. It will go all right. You ought to make a lot of money out of that."
3. "You know it, don't you?" he would continue.
4. "I didn't find out anything to-day," said Carrie, taking off hergloves. "They all want money to get you a place."
5. "Why don't you take anything, George, temporarily?" she said."What difference does it make? Maybe, after a while, you'll getsomething better."
6. "How are you, Frank?" said Hurstwood, somewhat relieved by thesight of him. "Sit down," and he motioned him to one of thechairs in the little room.

1. "Why, just this. You have this quality in your eyes and mouthand in your nature. You can lose it, you know. If you turn awayfrom it and live to satisfy yourself alone, it will go fastenough. The look will leave your eyes. Your mouth will change.Your power to act will disappear. You may think they won't, butthey will. Nature takes care of that."
2. "I'll ring for soap and towels," he said, "and send you up ahair-brush. Then you can bathe and get ready for breakfast.I'll go for a shave and come back and get you, and then we'll goout and look for some clothes for you."
3. Hurstwood went down and out. He walked straight away in thedirection indicated, while the policemen looked after.
4. Mrs. Morgan looked at him as if she feared a personal assault. Her eye lightened with resentment.
5. "Of course we are," he said, with the slightest modification ofsharpness.
6. "Of course, you'll do," said Drouet, who, in his efforts toenthuse Carrie, had interested himself. "Do you think I'd comehome here and urge you to do something that I didn't think youwould make a success of? You can act all right. It'll be goodfor you."

1. Everything he discovered in his line advertised as anopportunity, was either too expensive or too wretched for him.Besides, winter was coming, the papers were announcing hardships, and there was a general feeling of hard times in the air, or, atleast, he thought so. In his worry, other people's worriesbecame apparent. No item about a firm failing, a familystarving, or a man dying upon the streets, supposedly ofstarvation, but arrested his eye as he scanned the morningpapers. Once the "World" came out with a flaring announcementabout "80,000 people out of employment in New York this winter,"which struck as a knife at his heart.
2. "She ought not to be in comedy," he said. "I think she could dobetter than that."
3. There was a time when he had been considerably enamoured of hisJessica, especially when he was younger and more confined in hissuccess. Now, however, in her seventeenth year, Jessica haddeveloped a certain amount of reserve and independence which wasnot inviting to the richest form of parental devotion. She was inthe high school, and had notions of life which were decidedlythose of a patrician. She liked nice clothes and urged for themconstantly. Thoughts of love and elegant individualestablishments were running in her head. She met girls at thehigh school whose parents were truly rich and whose fathers hadstanding locally as partners or owners of solid businesses. These girls gave themselves the airs befitting the thrivingdomestic establishments from whence they issued. They were theonly ones of the school about whom Jessica concerned herself.
4、 Back in the flat, he decided he would play no more.
5、 He asked her one or two more questions and then turned to playwith the baby, leaving the subject until it was brought up againby Minnie at the table.

Hurstwood began to feel a deep sympathy for her and for himself. He could almost feel that she was talking to him. He was, by acombination of feelings and entanglements, almost deluded by thatquality of voice and manner which, like a pathetic strain ofmusic, seems ever a personal and intimate thing. Pathos has thisquality, that it seems ever addressed to one alone.

{ "It is so easy," he said to Mrs. Morgan, in the usual affectedstage voice. "An audience would be the last thing to trouble me.It's the spirit of the part, you know, that is difficult."

He dropped the note and looked quietly round. Now he knew whathe missed. It was the little ornamental clock, which was hers.It had gone from the mantelpiece. He went into the front room, his bedroom, the parlour, lighting the gas as he went. From thechiffonier had gone the knick-knacks of silver and plate. Fromthe table-top, the lace coverings. He opened the wardrobe--noclothes of hers. He opened the drawers--nothing of hers. Hertrunk was gone from its accustomed place. Back in his own roomhung his old clothes, just as he had left them. Nothing else wasgone.

{ It began with the approach of two or three, who hung about theclosed wooden doors and beat their feet to keep them warm. Theyhad on faded derby hats with dents in them. Their misfit coatswere heavy with melted snow and turned up at the collars. Theirtrousers were mere bags, frayed at the bottom and wobbling overbig, soppy shoes, torn at the sides and worn almost to shreds. They made no effort to go in, but shifted ruefully about, diggingtheir hands deep in their pockets and leering at the crowd andthe increasing lamps. With the minutes, increased the number. There were old men with grizzled beards and sunken eyes, men whowere comparatively young but shrunken by diseases, men who weremiddle-aged. None were fat. There was a face in the thick ofthe collection which was as white as drained veal. There wasanother red as brick. Some came with thin, rounded shoulders, others with wooden legs, still others with frames so lean thatclothes only flapped about them. There were great ears, swollennoses, thick lips, and, above all, red, blood-shot eyes. Not anormal, healthy face in the whole mass; not a straight figure;not a straightforward, steady glance.

Without much thinking, she reached Dearborn Street. Here was thegreat Fair store with its multitude of delivery wagons about itslong window display, its crowd of shoppers. It readily changedher thoughts, she who was so weary of them. It was here that shehad intended to come and get her new things. Now for relief fromdistress; she thought she would go in and see. She would look atthe jackets.
